Bondi Beach is home to one of the world’s most famous beaches. Taken from the Aboriginal word for water breaking over rocks, Bondi Beach was established in 1851 when Edward Smith Hall and Francis O’Brien purchased land in the area. Over the next two years, O’Brien purchased more of the land and eventually made it publically accessible. It wasn’t until 1882 that the government officially made it a public beach and it has been one of Sydney’s most popular destinations ever since.

Home of the world first Surf Club, Bondi Beach has grown substantially since the beginning of the last century, when few people lived here and the sand hills were an obstacle to the beach.
